Living Stones Ministry Opportunities at Assumption Church
By our right of Baptism and through the graces received in the sacraments,
we are all renewed today in the Holy Spirit and called to be Living Stones in this season,
sharing our talents, time and treasure with our faith community.

Assumption CSI: Catholic Students Interacting at Assumption: The youth at Assumption is always invited to join in our youth activies. Assumption CSI offers a variety of spiritual and social events that allow the youth to share their faith.
Assumption Prayerline: Volunteers pray each day for people who have requested prayer for a specific reason.
Altar Servers: Young men and women in fourth grade and older, serve Sunday and Holy Day Masses, funerals and weddings.
Art and Seasonal Planning: This group is concerned with our worship environment. Members are involved in preparing the environment for worship, especially for the celebration of the various seasons of the liturgical year.
Assumption Grade School: Assumption Grade School has been in existence since 1913. The school includes grades K-8. The Kindergarten is an all-day program. Call the school office for more information - (412) 761-7887.
Assumption Parent Teacher Guild (APTG): the APTG was formed in 1990 and is made up of school staff and parents of Assumption students. They sponsor school assemblies, family activities, and other enrichment events for the school community.
Adult Education: Throughout the year various adult enrichment programs are offered. These are advertised in the
bulletin when they are scheduled.
Assumption Theatre Guild (ATG): This is a musical theatre group comprised of parishioners and open to the community. The ATG usually presents a spring production each year.
Being Reached: Assumptions Network of Christian Hospitality (BRANCH): BRANCH was formed to welcome all new parishioners to Assumption, to give them information and answer any questions about the parish.
Bridal Coordinators: This group helps to coordinate wedding ceremonies held at Assumption. The Bridal Coordinator
is the liaison between the engaged couple and the parish staff and attends the wedding rehearsal
as well as the wedding ceremony.
Baptism Preparation: As parents prepare for the Baptism of a child, the Baptism Preparation Program supports them in their role of primary teacher of the faith.
Blood Drives: Our parish hosts two blood drives each year, in conjunction with the Blood Bank of Greater Pittsburgh.
Breakfast with Santa: An annual event for the children of our parish and their parents. It is held in December each year.
Children's Liturgy of the Word: On designated Sundays each month (September through May) at the 10:00 a.m. mass children (ages 5-10) are invited to participate in a special Liturgy of the Word, which is adapted to their
level of understanding. The children are led by adult and teen volunteers and is conducted in McGovern Hall. Consult the church bulletin for specifics.
Catholic Men's Fellowship: This group is designed to help men help each other to grow deeper in their Catholic faith and nurture their spirituality. They meet twice a month on Wednesday evenings.
Compassionate OutReach (COR): COR was formed to help parishioners through the grief process following the death of a loved one. This group also sponsors an annual Memorial Mass in November for families of deceased parishioners.
Christian Mothers / Women's Guild (CM/WG): The Christian Mothers / Women's Guild is a spiritual and social group open to all women of the parish, including non-Catholics who are married to a member of the parish. The group sponsors social and spiritual events during the year such as card parties, a hospitality night for women from neighboring churches, the annual Uving Rosary, and a Bowling league. Funds raised are donated to the parish school, CCD program and other organizations within the parish and the community.
Christmas Sharing Tree: This annual project is our way of spreading the spirit of the Christmas season within and outside our parish boundaries. Parishioners are invited to participate in the project by buying or making a gift for someone who is a shut-in, a resident of a nursing or personal care home, or a child from a needy family. The project happens during Advent. Volunteers distribute the gifts.
Eucharistic Ministers (EM): are privileged to share in the ministry of distributing the Body and Blood
of Christ at mass. Some EM's take the Eucharist to patients at Suburban General Hospital
(Hospital Volunteers). Some EM's take the Eucharist to members of our parish family who are
shut-ins.Eucharistic Ministers (EM) - Eucharistic Ministers are privileged to share in the ministry of distributing the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. Some Eucharistic Ministers also take the Eucharist to patients at Suburban General Hospital or to members of our parish family who are shut-ins.
Festival Committee: The Assumption Parish Festival is a major parish and community activity. It is always held during the week in August when the Feast of the Assumption occurs, although preparation for the festival begins several weeks earlier. Committees include planning, grounds crew, sound and communications, publicity, volunteers, refreshments, etc. The Assumption Festival is held each August for six days. Fun, food and games make it a perfect event for North Borough families.
Fish Fry: Held each Friday during Lent. Raises money for Assumption School and also is a community-builder.
Golf League: This league runs May through September. It is open to any adult member of the parish, at any skill level. The league runs May through September with a golf outing at the end of each season. It is open to any adult member of the parish at any skill level.
Hospital Volunteers: These volunteers are caring individuals who visit Catholic patients at Suburban General Hospital each month. Each week, some volunteers also take Eucharist to these patients.
Hospitality Ministers: These parishioners welcome the worshipping community to our liturgical celebrations, especially Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. This ministry combines the tasks of Greeters and Ushers. They welcome people to our church and also assist with tasks during mass (I.e. taking up offertory collections).
Health Ministry: This ministry is a combined effort with parishioners from our cluster parishes, Sacred Heart and St. Mary's. It offers various health-related events throughout the year, such as Blood Pressure Screenings, speakers to explain Medicare programs, Living wills and other topics of interest.
Ladies of Charity: These women assist parishioners with special needs by visiting them helping with light cleaning,
providing transportation to the store or doctor, etc. They also Visit members of our parish family
who reside in nursing homes or personal care homes.
Lectors: Lectors are members of our parish community who proclaim the Word of God during liturgies. This ministry requires good reading skills.
Music Ministry: The Adult Choir is open to high school students and adults without audition. In addition to an adult choir, there is the children's choir available at Assumption. The children's choir is open to parishioners who attend Assumption School as well as parishioners who attend other schools. Both choir sing for the various masses on Sundays as well as offering a Christmas Concert each year. The Jubilee Children's Choir is open to children in grades 3 and 4, without audition. The Jubilee Concert Choir is open to children in grades 5-8, with audition.
Ministry Of Cantor: This is a parish ministry requiring specific skills. Cantors are qualified vocalists who lead the assembly in its song and prayer. Music reading is preferred, and an audition with the Director of Music Ministries is required.
Moms, Dads and Tots Together (MD/TT): Parents of pre-school age children (including babies) meet twice a month in the morning. This group is primarily a social group which provides an opportunity for parents to connect and offer
support to each other, as well as an opportunity for the children to play together.
Parish Properties: A committee responsible for maintaining the physical plant (church and school buildings and
grounds) of the parish in conjunction with the maintenance staff.
Parish Newsletter: This newsletter , "Reflections", is published four times a year. Each issue may highlight a particular liturgical season as well as various parish organizations. Contact: Carol Gregory 412.734.3644
Pre-Cana: This marriage preparation program meets Diocesan requirements. It is presented by a team of married couples from the parish. Pre-Cana is offered in the spring of each year.
Publicity: A committee which helps to provide publicity for various parish events. They will be
responsible for items being sent to local papers, bulletins, etc.
Prayer Line: These parishioners offer prayer each day for anyone who requests this help. Prayer requests are
communicated via a phone-chain and volunteers pray within their homes.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process by which adults become members of the Roman Catholic Church. It is a period of formation in the Catholic Christian life. For more information, call the rectory (412) 766-6660.The RCIA is a process by which adults become members of the Roman Catholic Church. A team of volunteers assists fail development by facilitating experiences of prayer, reflection, worship and study.
Religious Education / CCD: This program provides religious education to students, grades K through 8, who attend a school other than a Catholic school. For more information, call the Religious Ed. Office (412) 766-4046.Vacation Bible School - Held the last full week of June, this religious education program invites children ages 4-10 to enjoy a week of fun as they learn more of Jesus and the bible. Respect for Life Committee: This ministry promotes the sanctity of life, from conception until death. It provides opportunities for individuals to let their voices be heard on these issues. It promotes the annual Life Chain and the March for Life held in Washington D.C each year. School Fundraising: This group is responsible for the various Assumption School fundraisers that occur through the
year - I.e. the Valentine Dinner/Dance, Candy Sales, Market Day, etc.
Sharing Tree: An annual advent project through which parishioners who participate provide Christmas gifts to shut-ins, residents of nursing homes or needy families. Volunteers also deliver the gifts.
St.Vincent De Paul Society: The men and women of this organization provide material assistance to members of our parish and our community who find themselves with special needs due to difficult life circumstances. Taize Sung Prayer: This is an ecumenical, reflective, mostly sung prayer experience that is held every 4-6 weeks. Volunteers help plan the service, prepare the worship space, and provide music. Members of the Taize committee are responsible for organizing the service, as well as creating the environment.
Vacation Bible School (VBS): VBS helps children ages 4-10 to enjoy a week of fun as they learn more about Jesus and the Bible. VBS is held in the mornings during the last full week of June. Volunteers include catechists, aides, arts and craft teams, a refreshment committee, a playground committee and babysitters.
Vocation Council: Members promote awareness of the need for and opportunities to pursue religious vocations.
Young Adults: This group is comprised of young (adults ages 18-39) in the parish both married and single. They offer various social, service and spiritual events throughout the year.
Youth Ministry: Assumption teens, together with a team of adults, share an integrated program consisting of educational, worship, service and social activities.
